From the rapid trending of the mobile phone as a primary source of information to the decline of traditional media in many places around the world, new information dynamics require exploration, collaboration and experimentation. One of the way Internews used to harness the possibility behind this exploration is the organization of Innovation Camps or Innovation Labs. This report is a record and evaluation of the first Social Innovation Camp for Internews employees and other attendees that took place in Sarajevo on 9-10th July 2011. It highlights the journey that individual participants took through the Social Innovation Camp (SIC) process and how their experience was shaped during and afterwards.
An integral component to the Internews Center for Innovation & Learning pilots is the accompanying research that measures success and failure. A research agenda is developed in conjunction with every project at the Center in an effort to produce information that can be used and adapted by practitioners throughout media and development communities and beyond. Understanding why something does or doesn’t work is the cornerstone to learning and advancing our mission of understanding and catalyzing the information exchange.

New research reveals a widespread lack of awareness of the security risks Pakistani journalists and bloggers face in their online activities. Training in digital security and knowledge of various security tools and platforms available online, including encryption, IP blockers, VPNs, and anti-censorship software would make journalists and bloggers aware of the risks and the tools to protect themselves. In a dangerous and fluid security environment, every extra measure of safety could be critical to free these professionals to do their vital work safely and effectively.

Beyond the hype of “going digital,” many media outlets who have lead the way in multimedia content production are increasingly facing the question of what to do with all this new material, how to keep it safe, and how to share it over the long term.. A new study from the Internews Center for Innovation & Learning, “Digital Media Preservation: Why Media Organizations Can’t Archive (And What They Can Do Instead),” explains options for the safe storage of content and the associated challenges faced by organizations attempting to store large amounts of data. The study also makes recommendations for effective cataloguing and management of digital archives, allowing content within an organization to be described, discovered and re-used.

With more than 43 million Facebook accounts and 19 million active Twitter users, Indonesia boasts the second highest number of social media users in Asia. Despite the wave of new technology, these figures mask a stronger undercurrent of digital and social inequality. Indonesia: New Digital Nation?, a new report from the Internews Center for Innovation & Learning, explores the potential and limitations of social media and ICTs to support local community development and advocacy in Indonesia and makes recommendations for closing the digital divide.

Social media and user-generated content played an important role in coverage of the revolutions in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya; however, content from the public was supplementary to traditional newsgathering in media coverage. By contrast, in Syria, with the tight control and exclusion of foreign media, news organizations had to rely almost exclusively on user-generated content, particularly in the early months of the uprising. Much of the user-generated content used by news outlets came via Syrian activists inside Syria and in exile.
