Launching the Humanitarian Information Dashboard

Current methods of collating and monitoring information in emergencies are time-intensive and do not allow us to track trends, gaps, or insights over time. Internews’ experience in working with local media in emergency situations is grounded in the work of the Internews Humanitarian Information Programs Unit, which has been responding to emergencies in more than 20 countries in the past 10 years.

On March 21, Sean McDonald of the Social Impact Lab gave a presentation on one of their products, FrontlineSMS. FrontlineSMS is a tool that collects data and monitors communication via SMS. It can track community interaction and manage records in a way that allows the user to see data trends.

Paywast: Afghanistan's largest social network

On March 14, Jes Kaliebe Petersen came by the office to talk about Paywast, Afghanistan's largest social network. As the country’s first mobile-based social networking outlet, Paywast was formally launched on January 31, 2011. Since its launch more than two years ago, Paywast has become the largest social networking media outlet in Afghanistan with more than one million users and subscribers, surpassing even Facebook and Twitter.
